Hello Everyone, I have a question. We are wondering about adding open content to Summon. If we do this, it would be a lot of content and would appear as part of the library collection. I have concerns about this for two reasons: - The result list might be overwhelming, is of varying quality, and may prevent the paid content in the catalogue, which is specific to the curriculum, from displaying in a way that students can find it. - Some of the offered paid content is from publishers like Elsevier and, even though we pay for some Elsevier content, I have deep reservations about 'open' collections from for-profit publishers. We do have the option to hand-pick some of the open collections on offer. What has your Library done about adding open content to your collections? Happy Open Education Week everyone! Today I am thrilled to share that we have developed and are now launching a comprehensive, flexible, and online training program for learners worldwide. This program is designed to provide a comprehensive foundation for new practitioners as well as to complement and significantly advance the expertise of those already working to support open education. This program is designed to develop expertise and capacity across a broad spectrum of open educational practices, including open educational resources and pedagogies, educational technologies, policy, advocacy, and scholarship. The program balances both theoretical and practical elements, always ensuring that critical perspectives and issues are foregrounded. The program is open to all and does not require institutional membership or sponsorship. Post-secondary institutions, non-profit organizations, government agencies, foundations, GLAM, and other groups seeking to advance the goals of open education may draw on this program to develop their staff expertise and capacity. Dear colleagues, An editorial team based at UBC Okanagan is putting out a call for chapter proposals for an open-access book about open pedagogy and the open education movement. This book will centre Indigenous perspectives and ways of knowing with regard to open education. Chapter proposals can be for essays, research papers, or case studies between 4,000 and 6,000 words, excluding references. Proposals are due March 15, 2022. *Please share widely* Indigenous Knowledges and Open Education Edited Volume (Open Access) Call for Chapter Proposals The open education movement has provided a substantial improvement to the learning and research needs of students, faculty, and community members. This has been done through various barrier free methods of publishing, and mitigates any financial strains that can occur. However, within the open access movement there needs to be careful consideration for Indigenous Knowledges, which are deeply rooted in community defined ethics and protocols, that do not fit into ordinary academic contexts. Many conversations around open education (OE) focus on a Eurocentric framework of copyright and intellectual property rights that are sometimes in tension with Indigenous knowledge systems, and the goal of this volume is to centre Indigenous ways of knowing, culture, experiences, and worldviews within the work of open education pedagogy and advocacy work. The publication target date is summer 2023. The following provides detailed steps for submitting a chapter proposal to this open access edited volume. The incumbent oversees the regular collection, management, and reporting of data for the Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) program, plans the Open Education Research Institute, and provides support to OER grantees, Open Pedagogy Fellows, and Open Education Research Fellows. Through consultations, materials and training, the incumbent communicates open education trends and practices to educators and peers. Collaborating with Teaching and Learning Commons staff, librarians, and other stakeholders within and outside of KPU, this position advances, supports, and evaluates open educational practices for KPU. Qualified candidates will have current knowledge of Creative Commons licenses and how to discover, adopt, revise, and remix OER educational resources (OER). A demonstrated ability to create or adapt OER using open education tools (e.g., Pressbooks, H5P, etc.), current knowledge of open pedagogy (e.g., renewable assignments), and the ability to design, develop and deliver information, resources and training on open educational practices is required. A Bachelor’s degree is required. A specialization in Communications, Education, Marketing, Educational Technology, or Library & Information Science would be an asset. Dear colleagues, UBC is once again running the Program for Open Scholarship and Education (POSE)<https://pose.open.ubc.ca/> in the spring 2022 semester from January to April. Registration is open to anyone in post-secondary who is interested. POSE is a four-month flexible and blended program that will help you develop foundational knowledge of Open Scholarship, Open Education, and Open Research. POSE will explore how open copyright licenses, collaborative practices, and networked technologies have the potential to lower barriers to knowledge by making the processes and products of scholarship more distributed, transparent, and accessible. POSE is intended for faculty, staff, postdocs, and students with an interest in open research, open access, open data and open education. The program is open to UBCO, UBCV, and non-UBC faculty, staff, and students at the post-secondary level. You will learn about: * Open Education * Open Access * Open Research * Open Data * Open Tools To support participant flexibility, the program is composed of online self-paced modules that you can complete over four months. You are also required to participate in two online synchronous sessions during the program. Reminder: B.C. Open Textbook Collection Outage on Tuesday, December 14

Dear colleagues, This is a reminder that the B.C. Open Textbook Collection will be down for scheduled maintenance tomorrow on the morning of Tuesday, December 14. Maintenance will begin at 6:00 a.m. PST and should be completed by 10:00 a.m. PST. Pressbooks itself will not be affected, so you should be able to access the web versions of all BCcampus-hosted books in Pressbooks. If you usually access a Pressbooks web book through the open textbook collection, it may be helpful to bookmark the web version ahead of time. If you know anyone at your institution who may try to access the collection during this time, please alert them to the planned outage so that they may bookmark web books or download files in advance. If you need access to a book file while the collection is down, email opentext(a)bccampus.ca and someone will send you a copy. A notice on the collection will give the same instructions. We will send another message once the maintenance is completed on December 14.
