Equity & Diversity Thursday, July 22, 2021 @ 1PM PT /2PM MT / 3PM CT / 4PM ET Free Online Event Join Ann Fiddler and Dr. Rebecca Karoff for a panel focusing on what is next for OER concerning equity and diversity. Event hosted by the CJCLS OER Committee. Use the link at the bottom to register for the first of the special series. This one-hour synchronous event will feature two presenters, followed by a Q&A: * ANN FIDDLER Ann Fiddler is the Open Education Librarian for the City University of New York in the Office of the Dean of Library Services. This office supports 32 libraries across 24 campuses in the 5 boroughs of New York City. Ann has been overseeing Open Educational Resource initiatives across the university since 2014. She has been the principal investigator for grants in support of OER from Achieving the Dream, The Gates Foundation, and The Public Interest Technology Network. She is currently leading the University-wide OER Initiative generously funded by New York State. * DR. REBECCA KAROFF Dr. Rebecca Karoff joined the University of Texas System in February 2016 as Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. She is responsible for leading and supporting student success initiatives system-wide. Her work addresses the student success continuum, PK-20 and into the workforce, and recognizes the remarkable responsibility and opportunity of the University of Texas System to achieve more equitable access and outcomes for the state’s increasingly diverse students. She is the primary architect of the UT System’s student success framework, and collaborates with institutional colleagues across the UT System to ensure student financial well-being, effective advising, and students’ sense of academic and social belonging. Her work includes leadership of the UT System’s momentum-building strategy on Open Educational Resources (OER), strengthening curricular innovation, and working with faculty to embrace their roles in student success. All her work is data-informed, equity-centered and quality-driven, and she is interested in expanded approaches to measuring student success. Beyond the UT System, she is a member of the Texas Transfer Alliance, a joint effort among the Charles A. Dana Center, the Texas Success Center, the Texas Association of Community Colleges, and four of the state’s public university systems (Texas A&M University System, Texas State University System, University of North Texas System and University of Texas System) to improve transfer student outcomes. She is active in NASH, the National Association of System Heads, and is a co-author of the NASH Equity Action Framework, a tool designed for university systems to assess their progress toward, and act on the adoption and integration of essential equity practices through sustained engagement. She chairs the Equity Work Group of DOERS3, the Driving OER Sustainability for Student Success Collaborative, work resulting in the DOERS3 OER Equity Blueprint and Equity Through OER Rubric. Dear colleagues, BCcampus recently received notice of an opportunity to collaborate with Wiki Education in the Fall 2021 term. Below is the modified text from a message that we received about this opportunity. The deadline to run a Wikipedia assignment in Fall 2021 is rapidly approaching! To run a Wikipedia assignment this Fall, submit your application by June 20. Wiki Education's support is fully funded, and there are no fees to run a Wikipedia assignment. The reasons to run a Wikipedia assignment are myriad, but here are some reflections that capture the essence of the project: "Although many students admitted they had first felt intimidated by the thought of their work being ‘out there’ on the internet, they all commented on the huge sense of achievement they felt seeing their articles published on Wikipedia at the end of semester and how contributing to global knowledge was incredibly fulfilling." —Professor Victoria Austin, University of Winnipeg "One of the things I loved about this project was the idea of being able to improve something on a public platform and offer substantive research that could be helpful to someone who might not have access to the same resources we are so lucky to have as students at the University of Michigan." —Aja Brandmeier, Student, University of Michigan To apply for a spot in the program, follow these steps: 1. Dear colleagues, Registration for the KPU Open Education Research Institute 2021 is now open. See below and the attached PDF for more information about this exciting opportunity for new and emerging open education researchers. Dates: Monday, May 3 | Wednesday, May 5 | Friday, May 7 Time: 9am – 12pm (PST) Program Description: As open education initiatives mature, it is imperative to investigate their impacts whether it be to advocate for institutional support or to iterate, innovate and further advance the goal of equitable access. For this reason, open education research is becoming an important facet within a healthy and thriving open ecosystem. This three-day Open Education Research Institute (OERI) provides an opportunity for new and emerging researchers interested in open educational practices to deepen their knowledge and sharpen their skillset while connecting with other researchers and joining a Provincial mentorship network. Learning Outcomes: Participants will * receive an overview of existing research on open educational practices, including a special focus on research conducted in or by researchers in British Columbia. * learn about different theoretical and methodological frameworks for research in open education * receive guidance on practical issues such as preparing applications for ethical review of their research projects and publishing their work in open access journals or repositories * work in affinity groups to draft and revise their research questions and be paired with an experienced researcher, who will serve as their mentor for the following year. The OERI is jointly funded by KPU's Office of Open Education and BCcampus. While there will be no cost to register for the event, registration is required for planning and logistics. To maintain a fruitful experience for participants, registration is limited. To cultivate a research community here is BC, priority will be given to registrants at BC institutions. To celebrate, BCcampus is hosting an Open Education Challenge Series<https://oechallenge.opened.ca/about-the-open-education-challenge-series/> for educators interested in learning more about open education practices (OEP). From March 1 to March 5, we will release two challenges a day. A challenge is a micro activity that you can do in 10 minutes or less that will introduce a small aspect of open education. Everyone is welcome to participate, but the challenges are designed for educators who are new to open education. Topics to explore include open licences, open textbooks, and perhaps even open pedagogy! This isn’t a bootcamp or crash course in open education: it’s more of a tasting buffet of appetizers, designed to allow even the most time-constrained educators to participate. Please join us at this event to celebrate Open Education Week on Monday, March 1, 12:30-1:30 Wicked Problems and Open Remedies: A Student-Centred Approach A wicked problem is one that is difficult or impossible to solve due to incomplete, contradictory, interconnected, or changing factors. A problem that requires a major change in practice, belief, or behaviour for many people is often a wicked problem. Drawing on this idea, we turn our attention to the wicked problem in higher education of empowering students in the classroom and centring student voices in exploring the challenges of and potential solutions for this problem. Arley Cruthers (Kwantlen) will moderate the session. Student panelists include Kristen Morgan (UBC Okanagan), Sophia Nguyen (Simon Fraser University [SFU]), and Caitlin Spreeuw (Douglas College). Open Education Event - Honouring Indigenous Writers on Wikipedia

For the past several years UBC Library, the First Nations and Indigenous Studies Program, and event sponsors (see below) have organized the Honouring Indigenous Writers Wikipedia Edit-a-thon<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/HonouringIndigenousWriters>. This edit-a-thon event, inspired by Daniel Heath Justice’s<https://fnis.arts.ubc.ca/persons/daniel-justice/> Twitter campaign of the same name, seeks to bring community editors together to work on editing Wikipedia entries for Indigenous authors in an attempt to tackle the systemic bias of Wikipedia while also trying to raise the profile of Indigenous writers. Instead of the annual in-person event this year the organizing team has put together a schedule of free events and Wikipedia-related activities designed for virtual participation throughout the month of March 2021.
