At the October 18 meeting, Kaitlyn Zheng from BCcampus will describe and demonstrate a new resource in development designed to assist faculty locate open textbooks for their courses. Using open textbooks that have been previously or are currently being used by post-secondary instructors in B.C. as a primary educational resource in a course, the new "Open Textbooks for Courses Finder" matches these textbooks to transferable courses using the BC Transfer Guide. Both primary and transferable courses are identified by course codes for precise and easy searching.

On October 22, 2021, the Open Education Working Group invites you to join us for the inaugural Open Education and Indigenous Knowledges Symposium to learn about and discuss the intersections between open education and Indigenous knowledges and ways of knowing. Many conversations around open education (OE) focus on a Eurocentric framework of copyright and intellectual property rights that are sometimes in tension with Indigenous knowledge systems. The goal of the Open Education and Indigenous Knowledges Symposium is to centre Indigenous ways of knowing, culture, experiences, and worldviews within our OE advocacy work.

Publishing In the Open: A Discussion on Open Access in Canada

Open access publishing is a rapidly expanding and evolving strategy for making scholarly work globally accessible. Unlike the traditional scholarly publishing model under which publishers require institutions or individuals to pay for access to these materials, open access provides a model for freely available research outputs to the general public for viewing, and often for reuse.
There is a great deal of activity in Canada that has advanced open access nationally, including publishing bodies and initiatives, and national granting opportunities and requirements. This event will explore opportunities and challenges from the perspective of two significant open access publishing initiatives, the University of Calgary Press and Coalition Publica.
You are invited to join a panel discussion with Brian Scrivener (University of Calgary Press) and Jessica Clark (Coalition Publica) that will address advancements and setbacks for open access publishing in Canada.

Past, Present, and Future: A Conversation on Open Access with Leslie Chan

As one of the original signatories to the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI), Leslie Chan has been at the forefront of the open access movement for 20 years. At the time of signing, the BOAI offered a hopeful vision for the future of scholarly communication in which scholars would use the internet to take back the means of academic production and provide free, unrestricted access to scholarly outputs.
In the years since the BOAI, open access has made a significant impact on the publishing landscape, yet many of the inequities, monopolies, and incentive structures that existed 20 years ago are still in place. For open access advocates seeking to upend traditional modes of academic publishing, it is imperative that we take a critical look at the trajectory of the open access movement and reflect on its successes and missed opportunities.
Join UBC Library and the Centre for Teaching, Learning, and Technology for a conversation with Leslie Chan to discuss the history of the open access movement from BOAI to today and what steps we can take in the future to work towards the original promise of an equitable, scholar-led communication and research landscape.
