Yes, we have put Heather and team in touch with a few folks at UBC. I agree with Jenni’s point about setting some goalposts with respect to the kinds of pedagogical solutions we pursue in the open space. Sometimes way may have to walk away from what looks like an opportunity because the drivers are something other than the principles towards which we’re designing or supporting. I have mentioned WebWork to them and that I can get an online demo scheduled, but they have suggested that they will be having several “vendors” in and that I can make a presentation at that time, something I’m not qualified or comfortable doing. I’m hoping to convince them to take the opportunity to have the demonstration by someone experienced using it and work with them on their “needs” and “wants” for both the OER and homework system. As I have mentioned before, the Engineering and Math departments at UBC are using WebWorks and are incredibly happy with their instance of this- an open source solution. Our College of Engineering is doing a major revamp of their first year curriculum. As part of that they have set a goal to reduce textbook costs for students and will be considering OER when they can find appropriate materials. They are also looking for a homework system(s). I’m trying to persuade them to avoid commercial systems since that will simply replace money going to publishers for textbooks with money going to publishers for homework systems. I’m wondering if anyone might have some criteria that they provide instructors / departments with for determining if the OER available will meet their NEEDS (wants are another story) and what modifications might be necessary, as well as what criteria they might use for determining appropriate ancillary resources and tools. Their existing criteria for the homework system would not be found in any existing systems, so I need to show them some more realistic criteria. Thank you for any assistance you may be able to provide. Heather M. Ross (B.A., B.Ed., M.Ed.)
