Examples of student authored Pressbook?

Hi All, I have an instructor who wants to create a student authored Pressbook. What we need to work out is the logistics of multiple students developing content for a single book. I am currently reviewing A Guide to Making Open Textbooks with Students<https://press.rebus.community/makingopentextbookswithstudents/>, but we are curious about the practical process of managing student creation of content. If you know of a Pressbook that was authored by a class, I'd love to speak to the faculty member about their process! Cheers, Jessica [cid:image001.png(a)01D7518C.4C018BC0] Jessica Norman, MLS Open Educational Resources Librarian Reg Erhardt Library Liaison to: Construction, Manufacturing & Automation SAFA Table Officer, Division IV (She/Her) Book an appointment<https://sait.libcal.com/appointment/16446> Southern Alberta Institute of Technology Stand Grad Building, MC113 (Office) 403.210.4073 jessica.norman(a)sait.ca<mailto:jessica.norman(a)sait.ca> Oki, Amba'wastitch, Danit'ada, Tân'si, Hello. We would like to acknowledge that SAIT is situated on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy. The City of Calgary encompasses a region that the Blackfoot tribes of Southern Alberta described as Moh'kinsstis, meaning 'Elbow,' in reference to its location at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers. Since time immemorial, this region was a traditional gathering place for the tribes of the Blackfoot Confederacy. We are meeting/gathered on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy, which, today encompasses the Indigenous people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta: the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut'ina, the Stoney Nakoda First Nations, the Northwest Métis Homeland - Region 3.

Morning Jessica ! I have co-designed a pressbook with my graduate #edtechethics class. We are working on version #2 this year, but this is the link to Version #1. I believe it is also possible to have multiple Pressbooks instances and then combine a book. Andrea Niosi at KPU has done this I believe. In my experience, multiple editors in the same book at the same time is like crossing the streams in Ghost Busters 😉 Best, Jenni You have received this message from Cambrian College of Applied Arts and Technology, 1400 Barrydowne Road, Sudbury, Ontario P3A 3V8. I would agree with Jenni- We edited the chapters ( in multiple formats) before putting them into pressbooks for version 1. This year we tried to have the students edit in press books - and it proved to be too difficult at this point in time. Hi Jenni, That is one of our concerns – how to manage 30 students with access to a single book. The other questions we are looking to address are related to student assignment of licences – I’m assuming folks have developed a written agreement that students sign to indicate they understand the implications of working on an open project, and official designate a CC licence. In addition to the book I originally mentioned, Christie Hurrell and Verena have some great information about those type of issues on a site to accompany their project: https://library.ucalgary.ca/guides/OER/codesign Cheers, Jessica [cid:image002.png(a)01D752E9.7C175340] Jessica Norman, MLS OER Librarian Construction, Manufacturing & Automation Liaison Book an appointment<https://sait.libcal.com/appointment/16446> From: JENNI HAYMAN <JENNI.HAYMAN(a)cambriancollege.ca> Sent: May 27, 2021 8:27 AM To: Verena Roberts <verenanz(a)gmail.com>; Jessica Norman <jessica.norman(a)sait.ca> Cc: BCcampus OER Listserv (canadaoer(a)lists.bccampus.ca) <canadaoer(a)lists.bccampus.ca>; Alberta OER Community of Practice (albertaoer(a)googlegroups.com) <albertaoer(a)googlegroups.com> Subject: Re: [Canadaoer] Examples of student authored Pressbook? Hi Jessica, We use the attached agreement with students. Since Pressbooks only allows for 1 writer at a time in any given chapter, and giving the author role to people is pretty limited, it definitely requires some creative coordination. Hi all: I would personally suggest with many students starting with collaborative creation documents in Google docs, where you can edit more easily and then once edited, have them add their sections into Pressbooks and put the doc together. The multiple Pressbooks can also work, or making many small short subsections/chapters within Pressbooks and then joining the text later can also work. Hi Jessica,
We use the attached agreement with students.
Since Pressbooks only allows for 1 writer at a time in any given chapter, and giving the author role to people is pretty limited, it definitely requires some creative coordination.

Hi Jenni,
That is one of our concerns – how to manage 30 students with access to a single book. The other questions we are looking to address are related to student assignment of licences – I’m assuming folks have developed a written agreement that students sign to indicate they understand the implications of working on an open project, and official designate a CC licence.
In addition to the book I originally mentioned, Christie Hurrell and Verena have some great information about those type of issues on a site to accompany their project: https://library.ucalgary.ca/guides/OER/codesign <https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flibrary.ucalgary.ca%2Fguides%2FOER%2Fcodesign&data=04%7C01%7Ckaren.meijer-kline%40kpu.ca%7C543f2182d77c41449e3c08d92134cf44%7C66b9f62d3042495eaab6db86f21500c0%7C0%7C0%7C637577333782740547%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=gfqv9pwjIAbMzVnOdo1Q2qZrSjFEx9A8SkoS83VR42U%3D&reserved=0>

I believe it is also possible to have multiple Pressbooks instances and then combine a book. Andrea Niosi at KPU has done this I believe.
In my experience, multiple editors in the same book at the same time is like crossing the streams in Ghost Busters 😉

Morning Jessica !
I have co-designed a pressbook with my graduate #edtechethics class. We are working on version #2 this year, but this is the link to Version #1. Each student wrote their own chapter and I supported them. I co-wrote the Introductory chapter which has more information.

Toronto is in the 'Dish With One Spoon Territory’. The Dish With One Spoon is a treaty between the Anishinaabe, Mississaugas and Haudenosaunee that bound them to share the territory and protect the land. Subsequent Indigenous Nations and peoples, Europeans and all newcomers have been invited into this treaty in the spirit of peace, friendship and respect.

Hi all, Jenni already mentioned Andrea Niosi’s example, but I wanted to share a presentation she gave along with students, Paris and Vanessa: https://video.bccampus.ca/media/0_8z05g05s This has also been mentioned, but the approach Andrea and other have taken, on Pressbooks, is to create multiple books and then merge them at the end so there are no issues with multiple folks working in a single book at once. Hi Jessica, Sam Newton (Sam.Newton(a)kpu.ca<mailto:Sam.Newton(a)kpu.ca>) at Kwantlen Polytechnic University created with his students the accounting textbooks Introductory Canadian Tax<https://kpu.pressbooks.pub/cdntax/> and Intermediate Canadian Tax<https://kpu.pressbooks.pub/intercdntax/>. According to the KPU directory, Sam is on leave right now, so I don't know if he's available to answer emails.
