A nursing instructor here just told me that they’ve heard rumours that the textbook they’ve been using for several courses may no longer have a Canadian edition (https://www.amazon.ca/Canadian-Fundamentals-Nursing-Patricia-Potter/dp/19266...), which will mean them having to begrudgingly switch to a Pearson text. She said it would be great if there was an open textbook instead. Does anyone know of something existing or in the works? Thank you. Heather M. Ross (B.A., B.Ed., M.Ed.) We’ve had some discussions about this with Rebus and OpenStax, looking at a health vertical and being very explicit about how it could work on national/regional certification basis. Had the conversation with David Harris (OpenStax) last April at Hewlett Foundation meeting. I think it could be a biggie for all of us. Early planning, but definitely being discussed. We’d love to do it as a collective effort. d On Aug 14, 2017, at 10:12 AM, Ross, Heather <heather.ross(a)usask.ca<mailto:heather.ross(a)usask.ca>> wrote: A nursing instructor here just told me that they’ve heard rumours that the textbook they’ve been using for several courses may no longer have a Canadian edition (https://www.amazon.ca/Canadian-Fundamentals-Nursing-Patricia-Potter/dp/19266...), which will mean them having to begrudgingly switch to a Pearson text. Hi everyone, On a related note, one of our faculty members in nursing is currently creating a new open textbook in nursing and leadership for a third-year nursing course offered at the U of R, U of S and SaskPoly. Her department has been very supportive of the project and the textbook is currently in the peer review process. We plan to publish it in Pressbooks in the spring of 2018. We have had a lot of support from our nursing faculty and I will let them know that there could be an opportunity to participate in a fundamental textbook. I've just been looking at the cost of textbooks in the nursing program and they're outrageously expensive. Best, Elsa Program Manager, Open Textbook Publishing Program University of Regina Press
