Dear colleagues, This November, BCcampus will be holding a series of five webinars related to OER production. One will be about finding and using OER; two will be about accessibility of OER; and two will be about creating OER in Pressbooks. All webinars are free and open to everyone. Are you new to open education and not sure where to start? Or are you just starting your own OER project and wondering where to find other openly licensed materials and what to do with them? This webinar will answer all these questions by providing an introduction to open education and OERs, discussing copyright and Creative Commons licenses, and going over how you can find, use, and properly attribute OERs. Introduction to Pressbooks<https://bccampus.ca/event/oer-production-series-introduction-to-pressbooks/> When: November 16, 2021 – 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm PT This webinar is part one of two that will discuss how to use Pressbooks to create and share open educational resources (OER). We will introduce Pressbooks and show you how to create and share OER with students and fellow educators. Pressbooks is an online self-publishing tool available to all post-secondary faculty and staff in B.C. and the Yukon. Topics include an introduction to Pressbooks, how to create an account, how to create a book in Pressbooks, and an overview of the Pressbooks editor. The webinar will also introduce such topics as creating math equations using MathJax, importing content, H5P, and sharing books in multiple formats. Technical Accessibility in OER<https://bccampus.ca/event/oer-production-series-technical-accessibility-in-…> When: November 18, 2021 – 11:00 am – 12:00 pm PT This webinar is part 1 of our exploration of accessibility and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in open educational resources (OER). In this webinar, we will introduce how to design OER so they meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). We describe the principles behind WCAG, introduce some different assistive technologies, and explain how to create accessible tables, images, videos, audio, links, and math equations. By creating educational materials with accessibility in mind, we can ensure these resources are more useful, powerful, and accessible to all. This session will include lots of concrete examples and opportunities to apply learning. Advanced Pressbooks<https://bccampus.ca/event/oer-production-series-advanced-pressbooks/> When: November 23, 2021 – 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm PT This webinar is the second in a two-part series that will discuss how to use Pressbooks to create and share open educational resources. Pressbooks is an online self-publishing tool available to all post-secondary faculty and staff in B.C. and the Yukon. This webinar will explore various advanced features of Pressbooks. Attendees will get to see a Pressbooks webbook edited in real-time to demonstrate complex Pressbooks topics in a hands-on way. Topics included are basic H5P, LaTeX, adding users and user roles, internal links and anchors, footnotes, the glossary tool, importing content, and custom styles. Beyond Accessibility in OER<https://bccampus.ca/event/oer-production-series-beyond-accessibility-in-oer/> When: November 30, 2021 – 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm PT This webinar is part two of our exploration of accessibility and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in open educational resources (OER). In this session, we build on what we know about technical accessibility to explore how we can go beyond minimum accessibility requirements. We dig into concepts like the social model of disability and how UDL can be applied in the design of OER. We explore multimodality as well as the benefits, challenges, and considerations of digital vs. print formats. And we dive more into math accessibility and how to write effective image descriptions. Introducing InclusiveAccess.org: Get the facts about automatic textbook billing

Little known five years ago, Inclusive Access has taken off as a sales model that automatically adds the cost of digital textbooks into students’ tuition and fees. While this model is intended to address some of the challenges with high textbook costs, it is also creating new challenges for students and faculty. How exactly does Inclusive Access work? Does it really save students money? What about this kind of program is “inclusive”? Straightforward answers to these questions aren’t always easy to find. InclusiveAccess.org is a one-stop-shop for information, tools, and other resources to help administrators, faculty, students, and policymakers make informed decisions about Inclusive Access and its implications for the campus community. A bilingual not-for-profit organization, CARL coordinates national initiatives across its member institutions and promotes their causes to achieve excellence in research and higher education. CARL invites applications for a Visiting Program Officer (VPO) focused in the area of open education (OE). The position will entail working for CARL for the equivalent of one day per week, and is expected to start in October 2021, for a period of one year. The deadline to apply is Friday, September 10, 2021. Visiting Program Officer positions are an arrangement between CARL and the individual’s home institution, normally for a minimum period of one year at 20% of their time. There is no salary remuneration from CARL associated with this position; the home institution continues to pay the Visiting Program Officer’s salary. Benefits arising from this experience for the incumbent and the home institution include broadened experience and knowledge gained from working on national initiative; while for CARL and its members, the position helps advance a common priority. Regional Leaders of Open Education Network Program: Scholarship Opportunity

Dear colleagues, BCcampus is offering five scholarships of $200 each to five faculty or staff to participate in the Regional Leaders of Open Education (RLOE) Network<https://www.cccoer.org/rloe/>. This amount would cover the entire cost of the program, which will be held online. This scholarship opportunity<https://bccampus.ca/grants-calls-for-proposals/scholarship-opportunity-to-p…> provides the chance for faculty and staff at B.C. public post-secondary institutions to learn about how open educational resources and practices can help their students and to receive valuable mentorship from open education leaders on how to implement an institutional open education strategy. The program requires a commitment of 12 synchronous hours and 12 asynchronous hours. The program will run for three cohorts, each of which will be in session during one of these date ranges: * October 25 to November 12, 2021 * January 24 to February 11, 2022 * May 23 to June 10, 2022 The deadline to apply for the first cohort is Tuesday, September 10. Expression of Interest: Development of Open Courses

Dear colleagues, I am writing to let you know about a BCcampus expression of interest request regarding the development of open courses<https://bccampus.ca/grants-calls-for-proposals/expression-of-interest-devel…>. In summer 2020, BCcampus began creating a collection of open courses<https://collection.bccampus.ca/> to assist instructors and course developers in creating and updating their courses, particularly while transitioning from in-person teaching to online. The collection currently contains nine full courses that are openly licensed and ready for use. We are looking for B.C. applicants who have developed, adapted, or adopted an open textbook in our B.C. Open Textbook Collection<https://open.bccampus.ca/browse-our-collection/find-open-textbooks/> to develop a new open course, or adapt an existing open course, that accompanies the textbook. Up to $8000 is available per grant, depending on how much work is required. Deadline for submissions is September 20, 2021. Read the expression of interest for more information. There are also three workshops of up to 15 participants, currently accepting applications until August 15. Topics include designing the future of open education policy based on know-how and good practices; new concepts & perspectives for the study on copyright for education; and Open Education for Green & Climate Education. Dear colleagues, I would like to pass on information about the inaugural Conference for Antiracist Teaching, Language, and Assessment, called ATLA 2021<https://www.atlaconf.com/>. Their website describes the event as, "An opportunity for instructors across a variety of disciplines to meet, share ideas, and build antiracist approaches to teaching and learning." This free digital conference will be held via Zoom in the Pacific time zone on Friday, September 17, and Friday, October 1. Between conference days, there will also be asynchronous activities "focused on taking actionable steps towards enacting antiracist teaching in our lives and classrooms." The conference will be hosted by Oregon State University and moderated by Jesse Stommel. Keynote speakers include Vershawn Ashanti Young, Ana Milena Ribero, Victor Villanueva, and Asao B. Inoue.
