The course covers how to connect with afflicted individuals, learn about the disease itself, and discover useful tools. This resource was funded, in part, by an OER Grant from BCcampus. BUSINESS & ECONOMICS Canadian (Alberta) [ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=16301119-8ec4-4241-b0f7-… | Business Math: A Step-by-Step Handbook ] Business math is the study of mathematics required by the field of business. This textbook covers taxes, gross earnings, product prices, and currency exchange; loans, lines of credit, mortgages, leases, savings bonds, and other financial tools. It also discusses how to execute smart monetary decisions both personally and for their business. There are two versions for this book: The "Basic Edition" and the "Premium Edition." While they cover the same content, the Premium Edition includes additional features such as Excel integration, Excel templates, Excel screenshots, along with lots of extra visuals and graphics to help student wrap their heads around the numbers, procedures, and concepts that they work with. The Basic Edition does not include Excel and those extra visuals and graphics in order to streamline the book. It's a great introduction for those that are new to OER and OEP (Open Educational Practices). The Introduction to Open Education edX course was a bit of a disappointment in terms of content and learning (in my opinion). It wasn't well facilitated and the community, in terms of discussion within and outside of the course, was not very engaged. CC is still fine tuning their training. So you can see what other institutions are doing when it comes to using OER in their courses and saving students money. If you see a course similar to what you are teaching, have a look at what OpenTextbook they are using. Hi there folks, Open Access Week is coming up next week, and I would like to encourage you to participate in as many events as possible. Open Access Week is a global event that celebrates and generates awareness about open access: "Open Access Week, a global event now entering its eighth year, is an opportunity for the academic and research community to continue to learn about the potential benefits of Open Access, to share what they've learned with colleagues, and to help inspire wider participation in helping to make Open Access a new norm in scholarship and research.<http://www.openaccessweek.org/page/about> There are many events happening around the world<http://www.openaccessweek.org/events> to celebrate Open Access, and there are also a number of local events happening here in Vancouver. Open Scholarship Day and Open Science Framework (OSF) workshop in UBC Vancouver - September 29, 2017

Hello everyone, I thought some of you might be interested in this event coming up next week: Open practices are empowering faculty, staff and students in Canada to transform the way they create, manage and share their research and educational efforts. Join us on September 29, 2017 for a full day of hands-on workshops<http://events.ctlt.ubc.ca/events/open-scholarship-in-practice/> exploring the practice of open scholarship including an afternoon session hosted by the Center for Open Science about the many simple actions researchers can take to increase the efficiency and reproducibility of their work with the Open Science Framework platform<https://osf.io/>. The Open Science Framework (OSF) is an open source web application that supports the research workflow, enabling scientists to collaborate and increase the efficiency and effectiveness of their research by making it much easier (in fact, virtually automatic) for researchers to keep track of what they've done, and why. This framework, which does not require any specialized knowledge of programming, was used to work on an important study<https://www.nature.com/news/over-half-of-psychology-studies-fail-reproducib…> of the reproducibility of psychology research. Greetings Open Education Colleagues: In early 2017, the Creative Commons Global Network (CCGN) completed a consultation process of renewing and reorganizing itself to support a strong and growing global movement. The year-long process resulted in the CCGN [ https://creativecommons.org/about/global-affiliate-network/network-strategy/ | Global Network Strategy ] . Part of the new strategy is to establish defined areas of focus, or “platforms,” which will drive CC’s global activities. [ https://creativecommons.org/about/global-affiliate-network/network-platform… | Platforms ] are how we organize areas of work for the CC community, where individuals and institutions organize and coordinate themselves across the CC Global Network. In the spirit of openness and to effectively strategize, these platforms are open to all interested parties working in the platform area and adjacent spaces. That’s why Creative Commons invites you to join the CC Global Network Open Education Platform! WHY join? * Stay connected to global actions in open education resources, practice, and policy. * Identify, plan and coordinate multi-national open education, practices and policy projects to collaboratively solve education challenges with an amazing group of open education leaders from around the world. * Secure funding (from Creative Commons and other funding sources) for the open education projects we collectively select. * Contribute to global perspectives on open education to strengthen advocacy worldwide. * Connect your country / region to global open education initiatives. * Be on the forefront in implementing Creative Commons' global network strategy. * Meet annually, in-person, at the Creative Commons Summit with members of the CC Open Education Platform to celebrate successes, share best practices, and plan for the next year. * Explore, practice, and share innovative methods for inclusive and open engagement with educators, learners and governments around the world.. WHO should join? * Open education advocates working in the areas of open educational resources, open educational practices, and/or open education policy. WHAT are we working on right now? * Reaching the right people (you!) to build a strong open education platform. * Developing decision making and engagement structures. * Defining the goals and projects the CC Open Education Platform will pursue.
