So you can see what other institutions are doing when it comes to using OER in their courses and saving students money. If you see a course similar to what you are teaching, have a look at what OpenTextbook they are using. In leading the OER initiative at Bay Path without a grant to jump-start things, it's become important to demonstrate the successes of OER at other institutions to help with buy-in from faculty and administrators. It would be a lot of work, but very worthwhile, I think. Hi there folks, Open Access Week is coming up next week, and I would like to encourage you to participate in as many events as possible. Open Access Week is a global event that celebrates and generates awareness about open access: "Open Access Week, a global event now entering its eighth year, is an opportunity for the academic and research community to continue to learn about the potential benefits of Open Access, to share what they've learned with colleagues, and to help inspire wider participation in helping to make Open Access a new norm in scholarship and research.<http://www.openaccessweek.org/page/about> There are many events happening around the world<http://www.openaccessweek.org/events> to celebrate Open Access, and there are also a number of local events happening here in Vancouver. Generally, these events are free and open to everyone. You can see a list of the local events on the BCcampus calendar<https://bccampus.ca/calendar/>. This year, BCIT is proud to partner with UBC and SFU to celebrate Open Access. Together, BCIT, SFU and UBC are bringing to you a conversation about tensions and risks in open scholarship. There will be a thought provoking panel discussion, moderated by Amanda Coolidge of BCcampus, followed by audience engagement. The event will take place on October 26 at the BCIT Downtown Campus at 5pm. This is a free event open to anyone who wishes to participate and I would like to encourage you to attend. An option to purchase print-on-demand copies through SFU's Document Solutions for Canadian faculty and students is available for all textbooks. Published by the Justice Institute of BC and written by Rod Gehl (JIBC) and Darryl Plecas (University of the Fraser Valley), t he goal of this textbook is to assist the reader in forming their own structured mental map of investigative thinking practices. This recent addition, by Caitlin Finlayson from the University of Mary Washington, was evaluated by subject matter experts in B.C. MATH - Calculus Made in British Columbia [ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=c8c2b69f-5ff7-4b6d-a35a-… | Differential Calculus for the Life Sciences ] , by UBC Math professor Leah Edelstein-Keshet, is a high quality textbook designed with life sciences majors in mind. O ften calculus is taught as a technical subject with rules and formulas devoid of its connection to applications. In this textbook, the applications form an important focal point, with emphasis on life sciences. This places the techniques and concepts into practical context, as well as motivating quantitative approaches to biology taught to undergraduates.
