Thank you, Rebecca Over 60 Million Pages of Digitized Canadian Documentary Heritage Soon To Be Available At No Charge The Canadiana collections of archival material, government publications, periodicals, monographs, annuals, and newspapers will be free to access as of January 1, 2019 November 15, 2018, Ottawa, Ontario – As of January 1, 2019, 60 million pages of Canadian digital documentary heritage will be available at no charge to users. The Canadiana collections are the largest online collections of early textual Canadiana in the world. The removal of the subscription paywall will allow unimpeded access to this unique historical content for researchers, students, faculty, and all users in Canada and around the world. Making the Canadiana collections available at no cost to users is a result of the recent merger between Canadiana.org<http://canadiana.org>, a not-for-profit charity, and the Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN), a not-for-profit partnership of 75 Canadian universities, finalized in April 2018. “When our members outlined the vision and goals of a merged organization, ensuring the widespread access to the Canadiana collections was of vital importance,” states Alan Shepard, Chair of the CRKN Board of Directors and President and Vice-Chancellor of Concordia University. “Expanding access to this content encourages the study of Canada, both within and outside of the country,” continued Dr. Shepard. “We are proud to have followed through on our commitment to the community in our first year of operations as a merged organization.” The Canadiana collections include three flagship collections: Early Canadiana Online, Héritage, and Canadiana Online. The Early Canadiana Online and Canadiana Online collections are comprised of Canadian monographs, periodicals, government publications, newspapers and annuals and amount to over 19 million pages. The Héritage collection, developed in partnership with Library and Archives Canada (LAC) and CRKN, includes 900 collections of 41 million pages of archival materials. The Héritage collection includes scans of microfilm taken from some of Library and Archives Canada’s most sought-after archival collections. “LAC is proud to have partnered with CRKN to develop this fundamental collection for researchers, students, teachers, and all Canadians interested in their ancestry and shared history,” states Dr. Guy Berthiaume, Librarian and Archivist of Canada. “We applaud CRKN’s decision to increase access to our documentary heritage.” The removal of the subscription paywall and user fee does not mean that there are no longer costs associated with the continued maintenance and development of this content. CRKN and the archival community continue to add to the Canadiana Online and Héritage collections and CRKN is currently engaging with stakeholders to develop digitization priorities. Ongoing costs and support for Canadiana collections comes from CRKN members who have made a three-year commitment to fund the development of the collections and access platform. In the coming year, CRKN is looking to make critical updates to its platform, increasing the ability to find and use Canadiana content. An assessment and review of the content is also required to decolonize descriptions, search terms, keywords, and other classifications to ensure that they are culturally sensitive. CRKN also plans to eventually make the Canadiana collections available as open access which would entail a review and implementation of user rights statements. These developments will once again increase ease of use and access to the collections, eventually making them more readily available in research settings and to the general public. “Historians and digital humanists in Canada and abroad have been working with digitized documentary heritage to explore our history, culture, and identity. The content in the Canadiana collections has been used by researchers for decades. Excuse the cross postings: Join us for the Cascadia Open Education Summit, formerly known as the BC Open Textbook Summit, in beautiful Vancouver, B.C. on April 17 & 18, 2019 at SFU Harbour Centre. This event is co-hosted with our regional friends; Lumen Learning, Open Oregon Educational Resources, and the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges. This event is for new and experienced OER advocates offering the opportunity to learn and share effective practices in awareness building, implementation, collaboration, strategy, and research. Fall 2018 timetable launches (with a new feature for the Zed Cred)

Hello everyone, A quick update: The Fall 2018 course timetable launched this morning and, thanks to support of our wonderful colleagues in the Registrar’s office, it now includes a new field that makes it possible for students to identify course sections that have zero required textbook costs and qualify for the Zed Cred. Open anatomical atlas and anatomy images - expression of interest

Dear Faculty and Staff, BCcampus Open Education is reaching out to all faculty members and staff involved in the teaching and support of anatomy and healthcare post-secondary curricula in B.C. in response to a request from the [ http://www.oeconsortium.org/ | Open Education Consortium ] to identify individuals interested in collaborating on a project that would involve the co-creation of an open anatomical atlas of anatomy images. Background Anatomy is a basic discipline for all medical and paramedical fields around the world. Anatomical illustrations are essential for the teaching and learning of anatomy and are universally relevant in all countries. Good quality artist-created anatomical drawings are available in anatomical atlases and textbooks but are mostly copyrighted. There are very few good quality anatomical images available under an open license. If you think this is a good idea and want to participate in the creation and implementation of an open anatomical atlas, please respond to this email by July 15. A response to this email does not commit you to anything, it merely indicates an interest in this project. New funding for OER for Adult Basic Education announced

Two new grants from BCcampus to support Open Education at KPU

Good afternoon everyone, I am happy to end this celebratory week with some more happy news. BCcampus recently announced the recipients of their latest round of open education grants. Among the 9 successful proposals they funded were two proposals from KPU. The first is an OER Create grant to help support the development of an Ancient and Medieval History open textbook (a project led by Tracey Kinney) while the second is an OER Sustainability grant that will help us develop a specialized service in the Library to support OER creation. This round involved the largest number of grant submissions to BCcampus to date so it is nice to see our leadership in this space being recognized with external support. Hello everyone, I am delighted to share news of the publication of a new open textbook by Christina Page and her colleagues from the Learning Centres titled “University 101: Study, Strategize, and Succeed,” available at https://pressbooks.bccampus.ca/studystrategizesucceed/ A recipient of an OER grant, Christina and her team (which includes Graeme Robinson-Clogg, Rawia Inaim, and Vijaya Jammi, along with student assistant Anmol Mangat) have also developed 25 learning strategies videos (https://bit.ly/2IMhpvp) and soft launched two interactive Online Academic Skills Workshops (Reading Texts and Time Management for Busy Students) (http://www.kpu.ca/asw-online) Together, these resources eliminate the need to purchase commercial learning strategies texts (e.g., in the Learning Centre, for Orientation programming), enhance student access to Academic Skills development opportunities, and increase opportunities for instructors to integrate learning strategies into their courses. Cengage releases 3 current textbooks under an open license

Hello everyone, I hope you are enjoying this beautiful long weekend! Some of you have been following the moves of commercial textbook publishers into Open Education. Although many are justifiably skeptical about these moves, I and other open education advocates have been meeting with some of them to explain what it means to be a good actor in Open Education (e.g., providing and not just reusing content, making editable files available, hosting OER on a platform that does not require registration, etc.). One of the groups I have recently discussed these issues with is Cengage. I am delighted to share the news that they have followed our advice and have today released three of their (current) textbooks under an open license. These three books are relevant to a few of our programs at KPU so I am sharing them on this listserv. Canadian post-secondary faculty: opportunity to review new OER for Open Choice

Hello Everyone, See the below opportunity for all Canadian post-secondary faculty. Open Choice invites Canadian faculty to review OER for their upcoming database Choice, a publishing unit at the Association of College and Research Libraries, plans to release a new online database of open educational resource (OER) reviews called Open Choice. The new service will feature a significant collection of critical reviews of OER targeted to teaching faculty, instructional designers, librarians, and university staff charged with acquiring digital tools for instruction (IT, instructional technologies, etc.). We are looking for active teaching faculty who be interested in reviewing open educational materials for Open Choice. Just published: Open textbook efficacy study at KPU

Good morning everyone, I am delighted to announce the publication of our article that shows that Psychology students at KPU assigned open textbooks perform the same as or better than those assigned commercial textbooks (among other fascinating findings about their perceptions and usage). The study, which was co-authored by my fabulous colleagues in the Psychology department Farhad Dastur, Richard LeGrand, and Kurt Penner, was published today in the Canadian Journal of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. New grants from BCcampus to support the curation, adaptation, or creation of OER and ancillary resources [time sensitive]

Hello everyone, BCcampus has put out a new call for grant applications related to the development of open textbooks and other open educational resources (OER). This includes one grant fund to support the curation, adaptation, or creation of OER and another grant fund to support the creation of ancillary resources (e.g., question banks, slide decks, multimedia content, etc.) that support existing OER. The application deadline is coming up quick, in just over two weeks. BCcampus Pressbooks Major Release Scheduled: March 15-16

Great news! Pressbooks has been making changes to the interface and functionality based on your feedback. The major release for the BCcampus Open Education Pressbooks instances is scheduled for later this month. Here’s a heads up of the changes that are on the way. Most of the improvements are under the hood. However, there are a few big changes we would like to call to your attention. First, a new look and feel is available for the network home page and catalog. The new standalone catalog page is sortable and filterable, for improved discovery. Pressbooks has also given the webbook a much-needed makeover, with some added functionality. A wider book layout, better scrolling and navigation are just some of the enhancements. We have also updated the Open Textbook theme at BCcampus. A big thanks to Ryerson University for supporting the development of these changes. The Luther theme will be retiring on the same day as the new release. In their place, Pressbooks is releasing two new themes, McLuhan and Jacobs. These two themes both offer expanded theme options, and both are designed with textbooks in mind. We will be continuing to use the Open Textbooks as our default theme and the theme for the BCcampus open textbook collection. We are thoroughly testing the updated Pressbooks prior to the release and these improvements should not cause any issues with your existing books. It’s here! (In the past, the “save” button was named Update, Publish, or other variations based on the status of your post.) Note that when you create a new chapter, front or back matter section, you will first see a “Create” button, but subsequent changes can be saved by clicking on the new “Save” button. * Contributor Management: Pressbooks added a centralized contributor management tool where you can add contributors who can then be reused throughout your book as authors, editors, translators, reviewers, illustrators, and generic contributors. * Organize Page Improvements: Pressbooks revamped the Organize page, improving the display on mobile devices, and improving accessibility for keyboard navigation and screen reader users. * Chapter Importing: Now, you can import individual chapters from public, openly licensed Pressbooks webbooks using the Import tool. All you need to drop is drop in the URL to a book, begin the import process, then select the chapters you wish to add to your book. (Content that is private, All Rights Reserved or that carries any of the Creative Commons Non-Derivative licenses cannot be imported.) * Content Visibility: Pressbooks has made it more intuitive to manage the visibility of your content across web and exports. Now you can simply designate content visibility in web and exports on both the Organize page and the edit screen for individual front matter, chapters and back matter. * Import Files from URL: You can now import supported file formats hosted on remote (web based) sources via URL. If you have files hosted elsewhere (with the right permissions), you no longer need to download and upload files, but can import them directly with just the URL. * Ebook Start Point: Pressbooks has moved the ebook start point setting to the ebook Theme Options page to ensure that only one front matter, chapter, or back matter can be set as the ebook start point. (Note that Pressbooks tries to enforce the ebook start point you select. However, ereader devices may still override the start point you designate.) * Language Support Changes: Pressbooks has renamed the Language Support section in Theme Options to Language & Script Support to better reflect its functionality; we’ve also re-labelled Hindi support to Devanagari, to clarify that the Devanagari script supports Hindi, Sanskrit, and over 120 other languages. For those of you that would like to see what is happening at other institutions, here is a UBC Open snapshot. Here's a few stats as a teaser .... Since 2011, at least 155 UBC courses have been identified as having used open textbooks, OERs, or freely accessible resources instead of traditional textbooks. And if we look across those past six years, 47,423 UBC students were enrolled in those courses using open resources. The estimated cost savings for students has also increased over the past few years. Its intent is to recognize the significant role the literature review plays in the research process and to prepare students for the work that goes into writing one. Major areas of philosophy covered are Ethics, Epistemology, Metaphysics, Philosophy of Religion, Ethics, Socio-Political Philosophy, and Aesthetics. Gathering information about zero textbook courses (reply requested by January 15)

I am currently working to build a comprehensive list of courses with zero required textbook costs so that they can be identified for students when the course timetable for each semester goes live (approximately two weeks before course registration begins). For now, the zero textbook cost notation is added manually and requires a bit of coordination behind the scenes. To help expedite this process and fill gaps in this list concerning your courses, I have created a very brief (4 question) data gathering form. If this is relevant to you, I would be grateful if you could complete this form by January 15 (it shouldn't take you more than 3-4 minutes). You can access the webform by clicking on this link: https://goo.gl/forms/YEUQIoUJ0J9PcEF12 I should add that I realize changes may occur in your teaching schedule and selection of course resources between the time you complete this form and the start of your next teaching semester. Given that we do not want to provide students with inaccurate information about courses and sections with zero required textbook costs, I only ask that you make a note to inform me if any of the information you have supplied me with changes (I will also send you a confirmation email before the timetable goes live). Survey shows OER on the rise in higher ed

Hello! (Apologies for the cross-posting) The team at Babson Survey Research Group is out today with a report on the use of OER in higher education. The study is based on responses of over 2,700 faculty and there are a number of helpful findings. And The Chronicle of Higher Education published a story on the findings: [ https://www.chronicle.com/article/Use-of-Free-Textbooks-Is/242086 | https://www.chronicle.com/article/Use-of-Free-Textbooks-Is/242086 ] Key Findings Include: * Faculty awareness of OER has increased, with 29 percent of faculty reporting that they were “Aware” or “Very Aware” of open educational resources, up from 25 percent last year and 20 percent the year before. * Graphic #1: Increase Awareness * Large enrollment introductory undergraduate courses have adopted openly licensed OpenStax College textbooks at a rate (16.5 percent) equivalent to that of commercial publication adoption. * Graphic #2: OER & Traditional Textbooks * A majority of faculty classify cost as "Very important" for their selection of required course materials. * OER can be as successful as commercial alternatives. * Faculty report equal levels of satisfaction with OER OpenStax materials and traditional textbooks. BUSINESS & ECONOMICS Canadian (Alberta) [ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=16301119-8ec4-4241-b0f7-… | Business Math: A Step-by-Step Handbook ] Business math is the study of mathematics required by the field of business. This textbook covers taxes, gross earnings, product prices, and currency exchange; loans, lines of credit, mortgages, leases, savings bonds, and other financial tools. It also discusses how to execute smart monetary decisions both personally and for their business. There are two versions for this book: The "Basic Edition" and the "Premium Edition." While they cover the same content, the Premium Edition includes additional features such as Excel integration, Excel templates, Excel screenshots, along with lots of extra visuals and graphics to help student wrap their heads around the numbers, procedures, and concepts that they work with. The Basic Edition does not include Excel and those extra visuals and graphics in order to streamline the book.
